Fitting and handling
Allow the timber to acclimatise in the room where it will be fitted for at least 48 hours before fixing, as this reduces movement after installation. Fix skirting to the wall using cut nails, lost-head nails, or grab adhesive on dot-and-dab plasterboard; architrave is typically pinned to the door lining with oval brads and glued at mitred corners for a tight joint. Once fitted, apply a suitable primer before finishing with paint, stain, or varnish to protect the timber and seal the grain.
FAQ
What is the difference between the nominal size and the finished size?
The nominal size refers to the rough sawn dimension before machining. Once the profile is cut and the face is planed smooth, a small amount of material is removed, leaving the finished size. For example, the 100mm nominal board finishes at 95mm face width.
Can ovolo skirting and architrave be used with the same profile to match throughout a room?
Yes. The ovolo profile is the same across both the skirting and architrave ranges, so the curved detail reads consistently whether you are looking at the base of the wall or around a door opening. This is a common specification for period-style and transitional interiors.
Does this redwood skirting need treating before use indoors?
No preservative treatment is required for internal use. The timber is supplied unfinished and should be primed and painted, or stained and varnished, after fitting. Applying a finish seals the grain and helps the moulding resist knocks and moisture from cleaning.
