Bright deep, dark red with a luminous purple core. This Shiraz showcases vibrant notes of blueberries over-layed with dried violet petals and gentle woody spices. The palate begins with a soft entry that quickly fans out and saturates the palate: the perfect blend of power and elegance. Medium to full bodied in nature, this wine has ample fruit purity combined with lively savoury nuances. Notes of primary blue fruits combined with licorice straps and a brilliantly fragant floral overtone. The tannins are savoury and detailed. They run long across the palate and opens the wine to a long, complex finish.

The grapes were crushed into and fermented in 5, 7 and 10 tonne open fermenters. During the peak of fermentation the batches received regular pump overs 2-3 times daily to extract colour, flavour and tannin. The average time on skins was 15 days. The free run was drained off and the skins were pressed, with the pressings then combined with the free run. After 24 hours the wine was racked to barrel where malolactic fermentation proceeded. The final blend was lightly fined and unfiltered prior to bottling.

14 months in 12% new American oak hogsheads, the balance in 1 to 8 year old American and French oak.

Under good cellaring conditions, this wine will age 10+ years.

Romance with a side of Thrill

4.25 stars! I was immediately engrossed in this debut novel, with the thrilling beginning and obvious future romance between Lou and Ava. I thought the setting of the town was wonderful, full of small charm and supportive characters. The little nods towards the continuing threat to Ava’s life were good. The budding romance was great, too! I think the intimacy scenes were soft and perfect. The main reason this didn’t reach 4.5 stars for me (thus would’ve rounded it to 5 instead of down to 4), is because of the POV switches during chapters. They’re a bit jumbled in; the reader is suddenly seeing or hearing things from Lou when it started with Ava, but then it quickly switches back to Ava. It’s not my favorite way for a story to be shared. I also lost a little steam towards the middle-end, right before the big finale. I’m not sure if my other hobby distracted me or if the story hit a slow spot. It’s possible I was hoping for a little more excitement. This story had more romance than thrill.
